Common Law Separations and Property Issues
KNOW THE RULES BETWEEN MARRIED OR COMMON LAW COUPLES
Common law couples do not have the same property rights as married couples. Married couples are governed by the Matrimonial Property Act. There is no legislation with respect to dividing common law couples assets and liabilities.
When a common law relationship ends, the couple does not automatically divide the assets and liabilities equally or otherwise.
