Custody, Access, Contact, and Parenting Time
SHARING TIME WITH YOUR CHILD
Custody, access, contact and parenting time are all terms used to reference the time you spend with your child. These terms can be interchangeable and often confusing.
If you are married, the term ‘custody‘ most often refers to decision making regarding the child.
Sometimes parents have an agreement in place where the child lives primarily with one parent and sees the other parent occasionally. Sometimes the child shares time between parents equally. Other times parents have difficulty communicating and need a document in place which specifically defines the time each parent has with the child. In some cases the child may be prevented from spending time with a parent, or their time is supervised. Our experienced lawyers at EBL Family Law can explain these terms.
The time a child spends with each parent may determine how child support is paid. This can have significant ramifications. It is important to involve a family law lawyer before you agree to a time arrangement with the other parent.
